THE HISTORY OF UNITED WAY OF MAT-SU

United Way of Mat-Su (UWMS) was born from a shared vision among community members and leaders to establish a locally driven organization that would address the pressing needs of the Mat-Su Valley. Residents recognized the power of collaboration and the importance of investing local dollars into local services to build a stronger, more resilient community. This desire led to the creation of a United Way organization tailored to the unique needs of the Mat-Su, rooted in local partnerships and focused on improving the health and welfare of all residents.

On December 28, 1987, United Way of Mat-Su was formally incorporated. Soon after, in early 1988, the organization adopted bylaws and elected its first board of directors and officers. The original incorporators—Minnie Fisher, Henrietta Hugan, and Karen Logan—laid the foundation for what would become a vital part of the Mat-Su’s nonprofit landscape. Early board members included Karen Logan, Clyde Bower, Helen Minnich, James Palin, Jerry Pineau, John Hale, and Lila Fergus. By 1990, just a few years after its inception, UWMS had grown to include 15 member agencies that served over 13,000 individuals throughout the community.

Since its founding, United Way of Mat-Su has remained an independent and autonomous organization, partnering with local businesses, faith-based organizations, nonprofit agencies, and government entities to maximize community impact. It has maintained a strong focus on creating opportunities for residents to live healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives. Over the past 35 years, UWMS has evolved into a trusted and impactful force for positive change—working to ensure access to quality education, financial stability, and good health for everyone in the Mat-Su
